Clerkenwell Crawl

To celebrate the London Festival of Architecture, the Senior BEEs embarked on a tour of Clerkenwell’s hidden gems. The tour began in style on the roof top terrace at Alan Baxter & Associates in Cowcross Street, from where the group enjoyed fantastic views of Clerkenwell and the City. The tour then progressed to the Poultry Market at Smithfields, a masterpiece of 1960s engineering, followed by a visit to St Barts Hospital to see the Grand Staircase, with its magnificent Hogarth murals, and the Great Hall. The Senior BEEs ended the session with a visit to Ash Sakula Architects, talking to the architects involved in the design and construction of Hackney’s landmark Hothouse building. An enlightening and enjoyable time was had by all.

Fun creative workshops for Hackney Schools at the RIBA

The Building Exploratory was approached by Price & Myers and Matthew Lloyd Architects to set up workshops for the London Festival of Architecture, enabling Hackney’s school children to take part in a debate about new British housing. The RIBA’s current exhibition,  ‘Evolving Norms of British Housing’, was used as a springboard for the workshops. The exciting sessions, organised and facilitated by The Building Exploratory Learning Team, enabled Year 4 and 6 pupils form Millfields Community school pupils from Hackney to visit both The Building Exploratory and the RIBA, exploring and critiquing the exhibition and its message. Inspired by the conventions and materials architects use to represent their ideas, pupils designed front elevations for new houses in Hackney and created a panorama of a remarkable future for housing.

I’ve learnt about architects and what they are”. -  Year 6 pupil, Millfields Community School

A really great day, thank you” - Teacher, Millfields Community School
